Northern California Schools Win $100k from Holiday Contest

Congratulate the Powell family of Davis who won Patch's Deck the House contest.

The Powell family was technically the winner of the Deck the House contest. But since the prize is $100,000 to Davis schools, Kristy Powell doesn't quite see it that way. “We all won,” she said. “There are a lot of needs at the schools. This is not going to fix it all, but it will help. This is a blessing.” On Monday Powell was approached by a young girl at Birch Lane Elementary, where she teaches. The girl had an adorable suggestion for how the prize money should be spent.  "She said 'we need tether ball hooks,'" Powell said. And while that request is mostly just cute and innocent, it also carries some truth, according to Powell. "You want it to benefit the kids directly."  Powell entered her home in Patch's national Deck the House …

Sheriff's Reminder: Don't Shoot on New Year's

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Los Angeles Police Department are reminding locals that shooting guns into the air is a felony.

When the party starts, and it’s time to ring in the new year, law enforcement advises people to never shoot guns into the air. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles Police Department are reminding locals not to shoot guns in the air on New Year's Eve or day. “When you get to New Year’s bang pots and pans [instead],” Sheriff’s Captain Dave Silversparre said at Crescenta Valley Town Council’s meeting in December. Silversparre’s message comes from a Los Angeles city and county campaign.  Shooting a gun in the air is a felony and a person could spend up to one year in prison if found, according to a release from both the Los Angeles Police Department and los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.  “If a stray bullet from …

Do You Know the Top Holiday Hazards for Pets?

While you may think it's the sweater that Aunt Gertie straps to your schnauzer year after year, there are, in fact, far worse holiday hazards that may befall your pet.

So there's Uncle Jake at the holiday table. He's happily devoured a plate of fatty spare ribs and wants to share the bones with your family dog. Just say no. The holiday season presents a feast of health hazards to your cats, dogs and any other family pets that may pad about your tables, floors or festive decorations.
