The U.S. House Appropriations Committee voted to include $5 million to build an earthquake warning system. Patch file photo.
SA July 16, 2014 at 11:33 am
Typical Democrat wanting to spend money like Brown’s crazy train. What is an early warningRead More system.. “brace for shock” ? What we need is an early warning system that warns us before a Democrat / Liberal opens his month.
Reginald "Rex" Henderson July 17, 2014 at 06:54 am
Just another extension of socialist Obama...
Rick Crockett July 19, 2014 at 10:38 am
Wow! Talk about Brown-Obama-Democrat Cronyism. Not only can the system be built and installed forRead More less than $500/node, it already has. I helped with one of the nodes with-in the past four years. The system (requiring less than 25 sq.ft. (donated) can be set up similar to a Home WiFi Security Cam with FTP access. Really it can be automatically monitored and maintained for free through a cooperating University. This is merely a $16 million a year hornswoggle going into the crony's pocket. Its dirtier than greedy profit. All that, lying cheating and stealing on top of it. Republicans in office don't deserve to be there because they do not study and know about the communities they represent or what they have already (and recently) funded. They are not doing their jobs in a two party system. Having formerly worked for the DNC the only thing good I can say about democrats is they at least learn their constituencies well enough to manipulate them.

It would just be nice if our California Do Nothing Congress would put their time and efforts intoRead More helping our State with real problems instead of making their constituency feel like they are making a difference with alcohol and marijuana leniency laws. This is not real Government in action.
Virginia Johnson July 15, 2014 at 04:22 pm
p.s. Most of our Federal, State and Local Government Parks do not allow alcohol and that is whereRead More many Farmers Markets are located. How is this going to work out?
Average American June 27, 2014 at 08:50 am
Make no mistake about it, they are going to be coming for your guns eventually, just a matter ofRead More time. They will first go for the "Registry" and I think the more informed of us all know that a registry has preceeded almost every gun grab in history. How did that registry work out for the Jews in WW2?

Suppose that within a mental evaluation for gun purchase, the citizen reveals a deeply held dislikeRead More and distrust of the Government. Some people would not want this person to be allowed to purchase just for this one "excuse." Suggest everybody focus on getting US corporations to return to the USA (from Asia) for all of their manufacturing. Nothing stops bullets like JOBS!

Note that this law would NOT have stopped the Isla Vista shooting because the parents did NOT callRead More the local mental health agency as well as the police. Note that by failing to check the California gun registry - available in every patrol car - they would not have even considered issuing such an order because they didn't think there were any firearms in the area - and neither did his parents, apparently. I have a lot of questions regarding this case - and one of them is that given junior had been making violent postings for more than a week or two, why didn't the parents cut off his funds and compel him to return home and be evaluated?

KMA: what is your point about how old is the S of L? Do you think wise philosophy has an expirationRead More date? Let's hope the sonnet by Lazarus is just as meaningful today as then. And, it's part of what makes the USA exceptionally great in the world and time. Of course, some limitations have to be included. These are embodied in the law. The problem today is that the law is not being enforced primarily because the head of enforcement and his minions want to let in more people who, they would like to believe, are likely to vote for their kind in the future.

I really really hope bases are closed. This country needs to refocus its funds elsewhere. PerhapsRead More the land where the bases are can have factories built on them to replace jobs lost.
Tom Jackson June 13, 2014 at 09:30 am
I guess keeping anything military open is stupid if you plan on becoming a third world country atRead More the mercy of one of the other big three. People don't get the far reaching ramifications of closing bases. One only needs to drive over to Norton a air a base in San Bernadino to see how a base closure affects the local community. The place has become a slum. All the local businesses that flourished with the base business are gone now. Thousands of jobs were affected. It's likedriving through TJ. The problem with supporters of base closures is they dont think outside their own little box. The closures also affect the budgeting for our National defense. Of course I understand that many of the viewers here don't believe in National defense. Perhaps if one of our buildings were leveled like in NY by a terrorist organization you would be more supportive of a base remaining operational. Clinton trimmed everything he could back in the 90's dozens if basis were closed. Even he knew when to stop. We are at the bare minimum now having just enough bases to support our needed military.
R. Ray Morford June 13, 2014 at 11:45 am
The Obummer can use the closed military bases to house all of the illegal youth crossing ourRead More borders.....at tax payer expense. We're coming closer to being a Socialist nation every day. Hillary will love that. ARE YOU A SOCIALIST OR A PATRIOT?

The basic ideas put forth in this initiate are good and I support them. I believe that clarity inRead More city economics are what is needed. Identifying revenue and how it is used is the right goal. What is not stated in the complaint but is important to me is not identified here. That is that when the flow of traffic is getting more and more congested, it is annoying to see Traffic officers writing tickets, while intersections are blocked. In law enforcement if an officer sees a crime being committed they are duty bound to act. City Traffic Officers will spend their time writing tickets as cars clog the intersections and streets. This is the wrong priority. If a traffic officer sees that traffic is impaired they should immediately be self tasked to traffic support and forgo writing that next parking violator. Congested traffic affects workers getting to work, getting work done and getting to or caring for their families. Parking violators are an inconvenience at best. Clear those intersections. And not just after a complaint or during presumed "rush hours." There are no rush hours in the City of Los Angeles...congestion is constant from sun up to beyond sun down. Find other ways to solve the cities poor budget management. TRAFFIC OFFICER SHOULD MOVE TRAFFIC!
Sherry Barnett June 12, 2014 at 06:28 pm
Absolutely. It's about time. These parking violations are exorbitant. Totally out of hand. ParkingRead More officers are often waiting to pounce just to fill quotas. Has little to do with keeping the city streets safe and the cost of the tickets is gouging us ... The tax paying citizens. We're paying for all their hi tech wireless, invisible devices that are designed to simply rip us off as we try to get around town.

I told the editor on Friday that Occupy LA has nothing to do with this protest. It is beingRead More organized by a group of civil society organizations and grassroots activists who oppose the TPP including MoveOn.org, Progressive Democrats of America, the Organic Consumers Association, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Citizens Trade Coalition, Food and Water Watch, the Communications Workers of America, the No War with Syria Coalition and Occupy Venice Beach. Each group will have speakers at the event. I emailed the editor of this Patch edition, and City News Service immediately issued a correction to the Patch. The Beverly Hills Patch immediately rewrote their story. Yet this editor neither returned my email nor corrected the story.
