NASA Video Explains Solar Eclipse

Sunday's "ring of fire'' is detailed in this NASA video, pointing out what observers will see and where.

First it was the Supermoon, now it's a solar eclipse.  Here's a minute-by-minute schedule for Sunday's rare "ring of fire" solar eclipse that hasn't been seen in the United States since 1994. Unfortunately for Los Angeles, the best views of the "ring of fire" eclipse will be from Northern California around Eureka, Redding, the Sacramento suburbs, and Lake Tahoe, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times. But Angelenos will still get an awe-inspiring view. The Griffith Observatory notes for LA, the moon will eclipse 86 percent of the sun's diameter, which will be the most "extensive" eclipse the city has seen since 1992.  Still, it's a lot more than the East Coast will see. They're going to miss the event entirely because the sun …

Anti-Stadium Violence Measure Passes Assembly

Authored by Montrose-La Crescenta Assembly Rep. Mike Gatto, the bill would require California major league teams to post contact numbers for stadium security.

Assembly Bill 2464, the Improving Personal Safety at Stadiums Act, passed the Assembly, Thursday, by a unanimous 71-0 vote. Authored by Montrose Assembly representative Mike Gatto, the bill was inspired by increased fan violence at pro stadiums, including the Bryan Stow beating last March at Dodger Stadium. The bill requires major league stadiums in California to post numbers for calls or texts to contact stadium security about fan violence. The signs must be visible from the stands and in parking lots.  In a press release Gatto says it is security--not police--who is best poised to put down violent incidents, since security is inside the stadium. Like the beating of Giants fan Bryan Stow, the incidents often occur over several minutes and…

Authorities Comb Verdugo Mountains for Missing FBI Agent

Burbank Police, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department personnel and FBI agents are searching the Verdugo Mountains on foot Friday, the week anniversary of Stephen Ivens' disappearance.

Authorities from throughout Los Angeles County are searching the Verdugo Mountains above Montrose-La Crescenta for missing FBI agent Stephen Ivens, as his wife updated the Facebook page dedicated to his safe return. Titled "Thea's Thoughts,'' Thea Ivens wrote: Today is not a good day. Today is a week-versary of Steve’s disappearance. My little munchkin & I are not happy campers right now. Last night, I heard the word “trauma.” I know that word but somehow, I haven’t associated myself to that word until I heard it & thought. “Oh, that was what happened to me & our family.” At church this morning, I can’t help the flowing of tears. These past couple of days, I felt empty, exhausted & I thought I’d cried everything out already. I’m surprised …

'Prom' Graffiti is a First for Nearby Trails

A La Canada Flintridge city official said Thursday crews would remove the spray-painted invitation scrawled across a rock before the end of business Friday.

It's unclear who painted the prom proposal on a rock formation in La Canada's Cherry Canyon, but the city's crystal clear about cleaning it before it breeds additional graffiti. Arabo Parseghian, management analyst for the City of La Cañada Flintridge Public Works Department, expects crews to have the spray-painted invitation cleaned before the end of the day Friday, he said Thursday. Scrawled in black paint across two rocks in Cherry Canyon, the word "Prom,'' followed by a question mark, showed up recently on the Owl Trail. "This is the first we’ve seen of graffiti on the trail,'' he said, noting the city did not contact the sheriff's department,, as the damage was not so significant as to warrant a report. City officials were alerted to …

Does Montrose really need another jewelry store? My question is, is how do stores like this stay a float during these down times?. I guess if you sell one 50,000 diamond ring you might be able to survive 6 months or so? Don't quite know the mark up on that type of stuff?   more ›

St. Francis Rides Strong into State Championship

The Golden Knights head to Los Olivos to finish off the season and compete against high school teams from the NorCal league at the State Championships on Sunday.

The following article was written by St. Francis High School Cycling Coach Lee Bird. Bird coaches several Montrose-La Crescenta students.  The St. Francis High School mountain bike team competed in the fifth and final regular season event of the SoCal league series at Lake Arrowhead, CA earlier this month. The race was crucial for overall season awards and the “thin-air” of the mountains tested all of the riders. Once again, the Golden Knights rose to the challenge and finished strong in this race, and overall for the season. The Lake Arrowhead course turned out to be very dry and dusty, unlike the muddy course that the riders faced last year. Besides the altitude and dust, the riders faced a tough 1.2 mile long fire road climb at the end …
