Patch Blog: Patch Hiking Club

A Patch hiking club could take early morning or after work hikes.

It was about 7 a.m. as I was driving on the Foothill (210) Freeway towards Los Angeles. With the help of my seat warmers I rolled down all my windows and used the crisp wind as a healthier alternative to my morning coffee.

Then I saw something that will forever haunt my eco-friendly dreams!

The multi-layered horizon of Los Angeles in which one layer is a filthy encircling of muck and desolation. Yes, I’m passionate but it’s only because that’s the air I’m forced to breathe!

Getting out of this entrapment has become a high priority of mine and that is why I would like to create a Patch hiking group.

I am a daily visitor to the Montrose Patch website and have noticed the great number of individuals that respond to hiking posts. Since we live in such a mountainous area, I think we should take full advantage of all that it has to offer, including the better air quality.

I propose early morning and after 6 p.m. hikes in the Sunland, La Crescenta, La Canada Flintridge and Glendale areas. If anyone is interested either comment on this post or email me at Tanya_ohanian@yahoo.com.

Here are a few suggestions for “mini” hikes we can take.

  1. in La Canada Flintridge
  2. Beaudry Loop Hike in Glendale
  3. in La Crescenta
  4. Brand Park in Glendale

Tanya, let me know what kind of a response you get. I would love to do a hike with Patch folks!

Interested. Are there any other hiking areas in Pasadena or Eagle Rock, both of which are a bit closer to San Marino? I've always wanted to explore, but not on my own. A group hike is much safer, especially when there are others who know the trails.

Just be sure to take necessary supplies in case it gets dark, cold or if you get lost. A small pack with necessary supplies in the eventuality is worth more than not taking it at all.

I would totally do this! Keep us posted!

I was speaking with Nicole (Montrose editor) about Echo Mountain, a favorite of mine above Altadena that goes to the ruins of a historical hotel. I'd be happy to lead a group up there some time if people are interested.

I'd be down for a good hike. I've been up to Inspiration Point and would be interested in an over-nighter around there or higher, actually. I'd be available Thursdays after 5pm and some Tuesdays at the same time. I live near Oxy and work and Fig and 60 so that's where I'd be coming from...

I've done that hike with my dogs. It's really fun, if a little slippery. I'll go if you lead.

It is a good idea to prepare for a group hike by starting short, easy hikes to condition yourself. We are fortunate to have a very do-able hiking trail here in Eagle Rock where folks can get in shape and enjoy a great view. The link below will take you to my short video on how to hike the Eagle Rock trail:

The nearby Arcadia and Northridge REI stores have local outings, as does the local Sierra Club...

Hello hikers! It is so wonderful to see such lively feedback. Our first hike is in the works. Yahhhhhh!! Since the sun sets early now I would prefer doing early morning hikes. How does that sound? Tentatively let's set our first hike for this coming Monday morning. Our moody autumnal weather just might ruin our plans, but it is what it is. I'll be posting the specifics very soon so please check back on patch!!

I can well empathsize with your loss. First thing, can you remember taking it off anywhere? DidRead More you wash your hands anywhere, soap makes fingers slippery. Did it fit well or was it a little loose? Running makes the arms swing. Strange as it may seem, it may still be in or on your own property. There are still honest people, call the desk of every business you went to. Also, call every pawn shop in your area and report. Good luck. If its any comfort, I found a diamond studded tie tack when I gazed at the soil in my garden and saw it. Keep us posted. b
