Montrose to Wave Stars and Stripes for Flag Week

Flag Day is June 14. See why a Montrose man wants the town to wave red, white and blue all week long.

You might notice an abundance of American flags as you stroll Montrose this Sunday through next Saturday.

The stars and stripes are significant to Montrose local Vito Cannella who has written an open letter to each president of the United States, including his letter this year to President Barack Obama, requesting the president to recognize Flag Week.

Obama did announce a presidential proclamation for Flag Week in 2011, calling on U.S. citizens to display the flag during the week in which June 14 falls, "National Flag Week."

"The origin of Flag Week is also very special to me because I am one of few people alive that was involved originally with Bill Bailey of Montrose, the Crescenta-Cañada Rotary Club, Don Carpenter, the editor of the Ledger Newspaper, and Congressman H. Allen Smith, on the successful accomplishment of Flag Week."

The Montrose Shopping Park Association will provide 12" by 18" flags for merchants to display outside the stores and restaurants in the upcoming days.

Montrose Ambassador Steve Pierce encouraged merchants and residents to wave the flag for Vito Cannella.

"[Cannella] would have a tear in his eye knowing what this community has done for flag week," Pierce said.
