La Crescenta's Jocelyn Chia Moves Up in Golf Classic

Chia shoots 3-under par to win event.

Jocelyn Chia of La Crescenta shot a 3-under par score of 70 to win the girl's division during Tuesday's local qualifier for the Trusted Choice Big I Junior Golf Classic at the Oakmont Country Club.

La Canada High School's Jennifer Kim shot a 79 to finish in a tie for second place with Monica Petchakan. Audrey Chung of La Canada took fourth.

Robin Jang, who will attend UC Berkeley next year, captured first place in the boys division, shooting 2-over par 74. 11-year-old Connor Brown shot a 75 for second place, while Village Christian's Joel Yoo took third. All three of these golfers qualified for the second stage state event. Also qualifying were Richie Maloof, Adrian Chia, Connor Muir, Jack Bouchard and Harry Yadav.

Tournament chair Rick Dinger said in a release: “This will be one of the strongest groups that we have seen advance to the state qualifier. We are really hoping to have a player from our community advance to the National Championship."

The state qualifier will be held July 7 and 8 in Santa Cruz. The five lowest scoring boys and top two girls will be qualify for the national championship this August in Reunion Golf & Country Club in Mississippi.
