Falcons Make Final Preparations in Scrimmage at Monrovia

Crescenta Valley opens the regular season next Friday against Santa Paula.

coach Paul Schilling had mixed reactions about his team's scrimmage Thursday night at Monrovia High School.

His Falcons looked solid at times, particularly on defense, where they made a pair of interceptions.

“We were just trying to come out here and see if any of the second-team guys can compete and not get any guys hurt,” Schilling said. “Our first group did really well. Our second and third groups of guys need some work. They need to step it up.”

Schilling said he wanted his team to scrimmage a tough opponent so his players would know how to be prepared for a high level of play.

“We like to go against them because they hit you hard and we can see ‘Are you for real or are you a pretender?’ for our own guys,” Schilling said. “I’ll watch the tape and then I’ll be able to tell you if we’re happy or not.”

Big Foot

Pavle Atanackovic is well known at Crescenta Valley for being a dominant soccer player. He scored 32 goals last season.

But the 6-foot-3 Serbian-born senior showed he can be dangerous as a field goal kicker. He kicked a number of field goals in the scrimmage, with his furthest being from 47 yards.

“The 47 (yarder) he made by 15 yards,” Schilling said. “Then when he tried the 57, he thought he had to push it as hard as he could and he didn’t hit it real well. He’s an over 50 yarder (kicker). We figure if we get the ball to at least the 30-yard line, we’ve got at least three points.”
