CV Football Putting Things Together

Zac Wilkerson's return under center highlights first week of fall camp at Crescenta Valley.

The football team is gearing up for its 2011 season and the Falcons are hoping to regain the form they enjoyed early last season when Zac Wilkerson was the starting quarterback and multi-purpose star Marro Lee was available. This week the Falcons are going through the rigors of Hell Week.

Wilkerson Back at QB

Wilkerson has returned to the quarterback position after playing quarterback the first half of last season, before moving to wide receiver when Paul Perugini took over as the signal caller.

“I wanted to stay at quarterback, but I’m very athletic so the transition wasn’t that bad,” said Wilkerson who was moved in an attempt for him to get the ball in the open field.

Wilkerson is excited at the prospect of returning to his favorite position.

“I’ve always done this since Pop Warner,” he said. “I feel like where I left off last year.”

Wilkerson likes how his team is coming together.

“We’ve got a couple of things to work on, but we should do well this season,” Wilkerson said.

CV coach Paul Schilling is confident Wilkerson will do well this season.

“Zac is just a football player. He started as a corner as a sophomore. He’s been around the game for a long time,” Schilling said. “He’s basically a returning starter at quarterback.”

Motivational Sleds

The Falcons worked on a number of strength conditioning drills at the end of Tuesday’s practice. One of those included pushing sleds with a heavy plate attached. Inscribed alongside the various sleds were the names of Falcon opponents such as La Canada, St. Francis, Muir and Burroughs.

“When we look down, those are our big rival teams. When you’re running if you get tired you might realize they are working as hard as we are,” Lee said.

Hell Week Without Warnock

CV is holding its first Hell Week in many years without former coach Gordon Warnock, who had been with the program on and off in some capacity dating back to the 1960s.

Warnock passed away during last season.

“Because we have this staff that has been around with Gordy for such a long time, you’ll go through moments where you forget; everything is cool and then we’ll do a certain drill and we’ll say that’s a Gordy drill,” Schilling said. “When we run the bags at the beginning of practice, that’s something he always used to run. When we stretch necks, that’s Gordy.”

Two Questions for Marro Lee

Senior Marro Lee will play many positions this season for the Falcons, including running back, receiver, kick and punt returner and as a defensive back.

Q: How do you feel after having missed five games last season with a thumb injury?

A: I’m just eager to come back. Our team, I think this year is more tight-knit. Everything is more polished than last year. I think Zac developed a long ball and I think (wide receiver) Nick (Ruiz) has worked harder. I had some time to work hard this offseason.

Q: How does the team look this season?

A: I think we have a lot of good returning seniors and some good upcoming juniors. I think they’ve surprised in how knowledgeable about the game they are. I think we have a pretty good shot at (winning) league.
