Crescenta Valley Falls Short in Bonita Air Assault

With summer football well underway, 30 teams took part during the Bonita Air Assault two-day passing tournament at Bonita High School. Some mixed results came Crescenta Valley High School in tournament bracket play Saturday.

Crescenta Valley suffered a disappointing loss in the quarterfinals of the consolation round. The Falcons the day before went undefeated in pool play, earning a bye into the second round of the championship bracket. But Crescenta Valley was ousted by Glendora immediately in the second round.

After cruising past Webb in the consolation round, the Falcons’ weaknesses showed against La Serna, failing to cross the end zone on a handful of drives. They were without a number of key starters during the tournament.

“It was hard to see how different things were,” Falcons coach Paul Schilling said. “The day before we had a number of guys fill the roles of the starters that didn’t show, and we played as well as we could earning one of the higher seeds. This time around, it hurts that we got beat against opponents that were at our level of play. I was kind of bummed out.”

Fatigue may also play a factor for the Falcons. Since summer football began, they have played in at least 30 passing games, and more will be coming over the next few days.

“When we head back to work Monday, it’s just trying to get better,” Schilling said. “There is obviously no reason to panic. We will be fine once the season comes in full swing.”
