Monte Vista Carnival a Smashing Success!

Children got lost in the Silly String Scramble at this annual family event!

hosted its annual family carnival on April 16. Usually held the last Saturday in October, event organizers Lisa Wilson, Cindy Greeman, and Peter Gick decided to move the event to the spring and start a new tradition, and it was a smashing success!

This year over 60 students from and combined their efforts and volunteered their time running the game booths and helping serve up fabulous carnival food.

Several new games such as the "electric chair," "kissing booth," and "pirate treasure" entertained children for hours. 25 different games including the popular "Hit the Showers" soaker booth and the jail house photo booth were among some of the favorites of the children.

Ruby Wilson, a first grader at Monte Vista, stated "I loved the face painting; my face is like a big butterfly!"

Most of the games were new additions to the carnival and were designed by parent Peter Gick. "This is a great way for me to bring several new games to the carnival every year and help the children look forward to something exciting," he said

Many local residents who don't even have children at Monte Vista attended the carnival because of the legendary food. In addition to the classic carnival treats like popcorn, churros, cotton candy and snow cones, attendees could choose from Mexican barbeque, Korean barbeque, or Armenian barbecue lunch plates.

Roobik and Jaklin Yaghoubi, members of Monte Vista's Armenian Club, helped to make wonderful meals for everyone complete with hummus, toasted pita, jasmine rice and tasty seasoned barbequed meat. Helena Kim, president of the Korean Club at Monte Vista, had a whole team of chefs cooking traditional Korean barbeque served with rice, dumplings, and kimchee.

"We served over 300 plates of food today. This is one of our favorite events and it is fun to see all of the families that come out to support our school," stated Kim.

A long standing carnival tradition at Monte Vista is to have the sixth graders decorate and work the "spook alley." Parents Karen Gates and Jane Montorosso oversaw the set up and execution of the spook alley. "Children look forward to being sixth graders and working the spook alley at carnival from the time they are little," Montorosso said. "They love to dress up in scary costumes and this is their chance to be creative and have fun."

"Our event was a great success and everything seemed to go smoothly. It was a perfect day and the children and their parents had a wonderful time. The games were great, the food was fabulous, and the prizes were fantastic," said Lisa Wilson.
