Measure S Passed, What do Elementary Schools Want?

New classrooms, better playgrounds and technology upgrades top their wishlists.

In April, voters showed their support for local schools by passing that provides funding for facility and technology upgrades on Glendale Unified School District campuses. It feels a little like Christmas as principals wait to see what upgrades will come their way.

Local elementary school principals have a wishlist of desires that includes new playgrounds, updated classrooms and technology.

“The major thing on our list is replacing our temporary bungalows with permanent classrooms,” said Kim Bishop, principal at “They’re out of date and too small for our needs. Also, the kindergarten classrooms need restrooms.”

Technology upgrades are at the top of Bishop’s list, too. “The phone system and computers are out-of-date. The whole infrastructure needs to be upgraded to support new technology.”

La Crescenta’s cafeteria could also use a boost. “There is talk of upgrading the cafeteria kitchen as well. Equipment must be replaced every few years to remain compliant.”

At , Principal Rebeca Witt is hoping for a new space for student assemblies and performing arts. “Our cafetorium is unable to hold the capacity of our student body,” said Witt. “It needs to be expanded and equipped for multi-media functionality. This room also functions as our indoor recess area during inclement weather.”

Mountain Avenue has also identified the need for more efficient and updated technolog. Right now only the third through sixth grade classrooms have two computers per room, though they are at least a decade old.

“The third area on our wishlist is our playgrounds,” Witt said. “The blacktop on the primary field has several cracks, and there are various pieces of equipment that need replacing. We also need a shade structure which would benefit our P.E. program as well.”

Projects funded by Measure S will ultimately be determined by Glendale’s Board of Education and the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee. Today is the last day to apply to become a member of the committee.
