Map: Montrose-La Crescenta Suspension Rates Well Below County, State Averages

You can look up how often students were suspended across the county at each district and each school using the below map and database.

A state effort to reduce the number of suspensions at schools across California has yielded a report that shows how often students at each school have been suspended - and Montrose-La Crescenta schools are well below county and state averages.

Locally, there were 856 students suspended at Glendale Unified in 2011-12, amounting to a rate of 3.1 percent of all students at the school getting suspended at least once that year.  That is the exact rate they got suspended on average across the county, a figure that includes schools of all levels.

By comparison, L.A. County students were suspended at a rate of 4.4 percent of all students while statewide the rate was 5.7 percent.

However, Montrose-La Crescenta school suspensions rates were low even compared to other schools in the district - Crescenta Valley High had a rate of 3.8 perecent, compared to 5.1 percent at Glendale High and 10.9 percent at Herbert Hoover High.

The upper level schools tend to have a higher suspension rate, and many of La Crescenta's elementary schools had suspension rates below 1 percent.

The data comes from a report issued in April by the California Department of Education, which looks at suspensions, expulsion and truancy at schools across the state.  More data on the subject can be found at the state's website under the 'Expulsion, Suspension and Truancy' category.

As part of the report California's Department of Education says it is undertaking steps to understand why districts are suspending so many students and to lower suspension rates across the state.

How to Use the Above Map and Form

The above map shows the suspension rate for each unified school district in the county.  Districts that service just one level of school are not pictured on the map.  Clicking on each district gives the suspension rate, expulsion rate, truancy rates and more.

The map's is color-coded so that the bright red districts are those above county average.  The maroon shade is between the 4.4 percent county average and the 5.7 percent state average.  The pink shade is below county average and the lightest shade shows districts with a suspension rate of 50 percent below the county average.

The database below the map allows you to look up more data for each school district or for any individual school in the county.  Be sure to use just one of the two categories to search; use either 'district' or 'school,' not both.

On the list of schools the database shows, schools in green have suspension rates at least 10 percent below the state average, while yellow schools are within 10 percent and red ones at least 10 percent above.

Please note the raw figures for suspensions show the number of students suspended not the total number of suspensions - some students were suspended more than once.
