GUSD's Daily Named 2012 Model Continuation High School

California Department of Education won this award for its programs designed to help struggling students stay in school, according to a Monday announcement.

Allan F. Daily High School, a continuation school for local high school students, was named a 2012 Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education

Daily earned this award in 2006 and 2009. Selected schools retain their title for three years. There are 504 continuation high schools in the 2010-11 school year, with more than 69,000 students attending. 

The Daily staff of is honored to be considered among the top continuation high schools in the state of California, Principal Dr. Chris Coulter said in a news release.

“Our teachers and staff work hard every day to provide a second chance to students because we all know that a quality education is critical in today's world and essential in tomorrow's world,” he said. 

Continuation high schools offer students over 16 years old and older who lack sufficient school credits and are still required to attend high school with risk of not graduating. School-to-career education is emphasized in an alternative high school diploma program that offers individual instruction strategies, guidance and counseling. Students also have flexible school schedules.

“Every student comes to school with a different set of needs, and our job is to provide them with the best chance to succeed,” said California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, in a statement. “That’s why it’s so important to provide students who are having trouble staying in school with great continuation high schools. The schools we are recognizing today have gone the extra mile to help kids get the education they deserve and need to succeed in life and careers.”
