GUSD Eliminates Furlough Days for the 2011-2012 School Year

Full school calendar is reinstated for the present year by a unanimous vote.

The Glendale Unified School District Board of Education met on Tuesday and reached an agreement between the Glendale Teachers Association (GTA) and the District to eliminate furlough days for the current school year, according to a press release.

The Board voted unanimously at Tuesday’s meeting after a victorious GTA ratification vote by union members last month.  The votes made official the January 11 consensus between GUSD and the GTA to remove two of the three furlough days planned for the 2011-2012 school year in the current agreement.  A third furlough day will be moved to the 2012-2013 school year.

“Our goal remains to push furlough days into the future, in hopes they will not have to be used,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Richard Sheehan in the press release.

“We need to keep the flexibility of furlough days until the state budget situation stabilizes,” he continued.

The current arrangement involves four furlough days during 2012-2013.  With this new agreement, a fifth furlough day will be added for next year.  The dates have not been established yet—deliberation will continue.
