Glendale Youth Orchestra Finishes Season Mid-May

Silent auction will also be featured and benefit the Scholarship program.

The Glendale Youth Orchestra will close out the season with a flourish in mid-May, featuring many performances from area music students.

The program includes five concerto contest winners, all students from the Los Angeles area. The GYO will also perform three orchestrated compositions with Latin jazz group Brasil Brazil and close out the concert with Mozart's 40th Symphony.

Among the five concerto contest winners performing that night are two students from Crescenta Valley High School: violinist Sarah Worden performing Saint-Saens - Introduction Et Rondo Capriccioso pour Violin op 28 and Stephanie Yoon on flute, performing Faure - Fantasie For Flute and Chamber Orchestra op.79.

Worden, a junior at CVHS, is currently the concertmaster of the Glendale Youth Orchestra and the Crescenta Valley High School Orchestra. She began her violin studies at the age of seven under the instruction of Gherman Markosian at the Metzler Violin Shop in Glendale.

Yoon, a senior at CVHS, started playing flute since the fourth grade and has been participating in competitions and honor groups ever since. Stephanie was the principal flutist in the CBDA All-State High School Honor Band Wind Symphony in 2011.

The GYO participates in the Premier LA Phil Youth Orchestra Mentorship Program, and is funded in part by a grant from LA County Arts Commission. The Pasadena Showcase House of the Arts is a sponsor of this concert.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased from the Alex Theatre Box Office, 216 North Brand Blvd., Glendale, CA 91203. Groups of 15 or more get 15% off. Students, children and seniors may purchase tickets for $8.50 each.

A silent auction will also be held. The proceeds will benefit the Scholarship program.

The event will be held at the Alex Theatre on Sunday, May 19 at 7 p.m. Call (818)-243-ALEX, or go to www.alextheatre.com.
