A Biologist Reflects on Our Life and Times

“A Biologist Reflects on Our Life and Times” is a free lecture at Glendale

Community College to be presented on Tuesday, Sept. 27 as part of the monthly Science Lecture Series.  The lecture will be held at 12:20 p.m. in room 177 of the Cimmarusti Science Center.

The speaker is, Dr. Ron Harlan, Dean of Instructional Services and Professor of Biology at GCC.  He is a career biologist who sees the world through a “biological filter.”  He will discuss how we are a product of our evolution and the differences between us and our primate ancestors, particularly a brain that gives humans the ability to manipulate our environment.  Harlan will look at the human species through his biological filter and ask: “Where did we come from?  Considering that we are part animal, part sentient being, who are we, what have we done and what will we leave as our legacy?”
Harlan is set to retire Sept. 28 after 33 years at the college.  He built up the college’s biology program into a nationally recognized biology transfer program.  He taught marine biology at the college’s Baja field station for 17 years.  He also served as president of the faculty Guild and as Biology Division Chair.  Harlan earned his Ph.D. from UCLA.
