Parts of Angeles National Forest will be open again for hiking, picnicking and camping.

Lace up your hiking shoes and pack up a picnic basket. Roughly half of the Angeles National Forest that was damaged and subsequently closed as a result of the Station Fire will reopen this Monday May 16, 2011.

98,000 acres will be available for the public to hike, camp and picnic on just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Specific areas include The Indian Canyon Trailhead, Charlton Flat Picnic Area, Gould Mesa Campground, Bear Canyon Trail, Paul Little Picnic Area, Mill Creek Summit Picnic Area, Silver Moccasin Trail, Nature’s Canteen Trail, Sunset Ridge Trail, and the entire San Gabriel Wilderness area will be open, according to information released by Angeles National Forest officials. See the accompanying map for more information.

These areas include 100 miles of hiking trails as well as campgrounds.

The burn area that remains closed is mostly in Big Tujunga Canyon. This area requires additional recovery time for species recovery. The National Forest Foundation recently designated this area a "Treasured Landscape." Officials have not determined when this land will reopen.
