The Los Angeles County Public Works Department will begin removing sediment immediately in front of the Devil's Gate Dam in Pasadena next week, according to a news release.
The work will remove about 5,000 cubic yards of dirt and debris to prepare for the winter storm season, reduce the risk of flooding and mudflows during anticipated storms, officials said.
Officials predict the project will last less than a month and is a pending completion of a draf Environmental Impact Report on the proposed Devil's Gate Reservoir Sediment Removal and Management Project. The draft EIR is expected in January, 2013, with project construction set to begin in summer 2014.
The removed dirt and debris will be placed at Johnson Field to avoid truck impacting the neighborhood, under an agreeement with the city of Pasadena, authorities said.
No trees will be removed and a biologist will monitor the process to ensure no impacts to wildlife. Hiking, riding trails will stay open, except for short term closures to move equipment along the existing roadway.
Green waste will also be removed from the front of the dam and transported to Scholl Canyon Landfill in Glendale at a rate of no more than 10 trucks per day.
