Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), lent his support earlier this week to the Department of Defense's decision to extend some benefits to the same-sex domestic partners of military service members, according to a report in the Glendale News-Press.
Departing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta released a memo on Monday stating that on U.S. military bases, benefits such as recreation areas, counseling programs and child care would be open to same-sex domestic partners of service members. Eligibility for legal assistance, disability and death compensation programs would also be open to them. However, the Defense of Marriage Act prevents access to other benefits, such as health care and housing allowances, the GNP reports.
