Public Comments for Rim of the Valley Corridor Study End Jan. 7

The public can submit comments for the Rim of the Valley Corridor Special Resource Study that will evaluate ways to protect resources and provide recreation opportunities in mountains circling different valleys locally and beyond.

Monday is the deadline to submit comments that will be considered for the draft study report of the Rim of the Valley Corridor Special Resource Study.

The Rim of the Valley is an “area that generally includes the mountains encircling the San Fernando, La Crescenta, Santa Clarita, Simi and Conejo Valleys of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties in southern California,” according to the National Park Service.

The study, which Congress ordered the National Park Service to conduct, will evaluate the following according to the NPS:

Project Manager Anne Dove and Planner Margie Steigerwald sent the following public comment reminder via email Thursday:

Thank you to all who have already shared comments on the preliminary study findings and alternative concepts, either through participation at one of our public meetings or by submitting comments in writing.  We are already working on reviewing and summarizing the input received so far, and we look forward to receiving any additional ideas.

With that in mind, we would like to remind folks that our deadline for comments is rapidly approaching.  If you've not yet had a chance to share your thoughts with us, please send us your comments by January 7, 2013.

As a reminder, our recently published Newsletter #3 includes preliminary study findings that address whether resources of the study area are nationally significant, and whether they are suitable and feasible for inclusion in the national park system as a new park unit or as an addition to Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA). Based on these preliminary findings, four preliminary alternative concepts are also presented in the newsletter for your consideration.  We are interested in your feedback on these ideas, and we look forward to hearing from you if we have not already.

Once we receive and review comments on the preliminary study findings and alternative concepts, we will move forward in preparing a draft study report, which will be presented to the public for review and comment in 2014.  While this next formal public comment period is several months away, you are always welcome to contact us at any point during the study process.
