Mike Gatto Supports Middle Class Scholarship (Video)

Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles), whose area includes Glendale, shares how he wants to reduce state college and university cost for middle class students.

Here's a release from Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles)

The Assembly Speaker and I just introduced legislation that will dramatically reduce the costs of attending the state's public colleges and universities.

Since 2004, CSU fees have increased 191%, UC fees have increased 145%, and community college fees have also increased significantly. I believe that education is a path to a better life, and that affordable higher education is part of the covenant between the state of California and its citizens. When fees rise, it greatly strains middle class students and their families.

Our legislation will close a tax loophole that effectively incentivizes businesses to keep jobs outside of California. Closing this loophole will generate $1 billion each year. These funds will be used to reduce UC, CSU, and community college fees by 2/3rds, for families making less than $150,000 a year. The average student at UCLA will see her fees reduced by over $8,000 a year.

The Legislation will require a 2/3 vote of the Legislature, which means that both parties will have to come together to support these important ideals. Please let us know that you support these ideals too. You can watch me explain the legislation in this Assembly Access Video. And be sure to visit www.MiddleClassScholarship.com to learn more about the plan, hear from real students about their experiences, and then sign up to show your support.
