Local Leaders Plan Tutoring Program at La Crescenta Elementary

The Crescenta Valley Town Council is organizing a pilot tutoring program at La Crescenta Elementary and need your help.

If you're looking for a volunteer opportunity in the community, look no further than a new program led by Crescenta Valley Town Council that aims to provide free tutoring before, during and after school at La Crescenta Elementary

The town council partnered with Principal Kimberly Bishop and staff at La Crescenta Elementary School to invite community members to sign up, help local children and stay dedicated. For at least one hour each week, residents can help kids with homework, play bingo games with English learners, read books and participate in other learning activities.

Volunteers must have a TB test and be available to work one hour (or more if you'd like) from 8 a.m to 2:30 p.m., or until 5:45 p.m. for daycare hours, Bishop said. Children at the school range in age 5 to 12 years old.

The school's GATE, Gifted and Talented Education, program is also looking for people in the community with special jobs, skills or hobbies, said Councilmember Dennis van Bremen.

There are about 500 students at La Crescenta Elementary and about one third of the students are still learning English, Bishop said.

Beyt encourages people to contact CV Town Council and sign up for one hour each week.

"It's just down the street so don't say you can't walk to it," said Frank Beyt, CV Town Councilmember on Thursday's meeting.

Local kids need the extra attention in school and there are only two requirements to participate in the program, Beyt said.

"We cannot leave these children without help," Beyt said. "So if you have the time all you need are two things. The first thing is you have to care about children. Secondly, you have to be dependable."
