Glendale's First Armenian-American Mayor Dies

Larry Zarian, first Armenian-American to serve as a Glendale city council member, died today. He was 73.

The Montrose-La Crescenta community mourned the death of former Glendale mayor Larry Zarian, who died at Glendale Adventist Medical Center Thursday. He was 73. 

Zarian was the first Armenian-American to serve on the Glendale city council, according to a statement issued by Los Angeles County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich.

“Larry was a friend for over 50 years and long-time supporter," Antonovich said. "His love for his community was evident. He volunteered in countless organizations ranging from the Boy Scouts of America to Glendale Adventist Hospital. In addition, he served as the Master of Ceremonies for the Annual Veterans Memorial Day Program."

"Christine and I send our heartfelt condolences to his family,” Antonovich said.

Zarian died after a battle with agressive cancer that stopped him from making healthy blood cells, according to Contra Costa Times.

Zarian was elected in 1983 and served for 16 years, according to Asbarez. Zarian also served as a Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transporation Authority board member and state transporation commissioner. His work was recognized by presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, and governors George Deukmejian, Pete Wilson and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He was known for his Thursday night talk show on Charter Cable, The Larry Zarian Forum.

He also served as a board member for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and as a state transportation commissioner. His public service was recognized by presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, and governors George Deukmejian, Pete Wilson and Arnold Schwarzenegger, according to the city.

“He was just dynamic in every facet of his life,” friend and Councilman Ara Najarian told The News-Press. “He was always happy, always energetic and always fun to be around.’

Zarian is survived by three sons, Vincent, Gregory and Lawrence; a daughter-in-law; and two grandsons.
