The new mayor served from April 2003 to April 2004 and April 2009 to April 2010.

Friedman was in Glendale's sister city in South Korea, Goseong, last week when the city council had a tie vote for the position, according to the Glendale News-Press

Three city council members were nominated for the mayor position, including council members Rafi Manoukian, Dave Weaver and Frank Quintero.

Manoukian welcomed Quintero to the position and mentioned he was nominated to the Chamber of Commerce board by Quintero several years ago.

"I look forward to a fruitful year coming up, working with him to benefit the community," Manoukian said.

Weaver congratulated Quintero and also suggested that city council discuss a way to reform elections to decrease tension or awkwardness within the council - who all still have to work together.

The decision for mayor comes from Glendale City Council members. Mayors serve a one-year term and are nominated, voted for by fellow council members.

"We’ve got to clean up this mess in the way of electing the city mayor this year," Weaver said.

"If not, we’ll just go ahead with politics as usual… There’s got to be a better way," Weaver said.
