AB 529 Passes: Speed Limits Will No Longer Automatically Rise in Glendale

AB 529 passes after several failed attempts.

On Tuesday, Assemblyman Mike Gatto's assembly bill 529 passed. After several unsuccessful attempts by other former representatives to pass the bill, it has now made it past the Transportation Committee.

AB 529 calls for cities to be able to round down speed limits, rather than round than up; since 2004, state law has forced cities to round up their speed limits, based on the speed behaviors of the citizens.

In a prepared statement, Wayne Ko, the traffic engineer for Glendale, commented on the irony of this: “If you think about it, traffic control is the only area of state law where those breaking the law get to change the law by their illegal behavior."

This will now change, as Glendale will now be able to round down when setting speed limits on local roads after a traffic survey, thanks to Gatto's AB 529.

Gatto remarked “I’m proud to have led the first successful effort on this issue. I promised residents that I would do something about those who speed through our streets, and I’m optimistic that this will help our cities address the problem.”
