2nd Positive West Nile Mosquito Sample Found Near L.A. River

The sample was collected in the 3700 block of Legion Lane in Atwater on June 28.

A second sample collected recently just east of the Los Angeles River in Atwater Village, about 11 miles from Montrose-La Crescenta, has tested positive for West Nile Virus.

According to Truc Dever of the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District, the sample was collected on June 28 from a trap set in the 3700 block of Legion Lane.

Another sample collected on June 14 from the same block also tested positive for West Nile Virus about a week later.

Legion Lane backs up on to the Los Angeles River's concretized sides, just north of the Glendale Boulevard bridge.

Truc says mosquito traps are monitored all year, though additional locations are added in summer.

Signs alerting residents to the results of the first test were recently spotted on the grounds of the Griffith Park Recreation Center on Riverside Drive.

Dever says a positive result of the test means you probably have infected mosquitos "within a mile radius."

This could explainwhy the signs were at the Rec Center grounds on the west side of the river and the 5 Freeway.

The sample is one of six confirmed Friday by the Vector Control District. The others were in Northridge (3), Whittier (1) and (Winnetka). A total of ten have been confirmed this season.

Truc says the positive tests are a reminder that residents need to be pro-active in protecting against the disease, now endemic to the region.

About one in 150 people infected with the virus will require hospitalization. Severe symptoms include high fever, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, coma, paralysis and possible death.
