UPDATED: Injured Bear Euthanized

Portions of the 210 freeway were completely closed, the bear was reportedly on or near the freeway.

UPDATE, 7:52 p.m.: Officials at the California Department of Fish and Game revealed that the bear suffered "catastrophic" injuries to its hind legs as a result of the vehicle collision.

"No one at DFG ever wants to see an animal destroyed. We do not destroy animals unless we have to, and to end its suffering," said Andrew Hughan of the Department of Fish and Game.

The bear was not the more famous bear dubbed "Meatball," Hughan said.

UPDATE, 6:37 p.m.: KTLA News is reporting the bear that was hit by a vehicle this morning had sustained major injuries and had to be euthanized.

The bear, estimated at about a year old, was euthanized around 4 p.m., said officials with the Department of Fish and Game.

UPDATE, 3:29 p.m.: All lanes of the 210 freeway are reportedly opened now after officials removed the injured bear from the area in La Cañada Flintridge.

PREVIOUSLY: Fish and Game officials have tranquilized and are treating the bear reportedly injured by a moving vehicle.

The bear was located behind a Starbucks, 475 Foothill Blvd., near Gould Avenue Sunday morning.

"They're out there. I guess he's in the bushes. They're trying to contain him," said an official at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station.

The extent of injuries to the bear is unknown at this time. According to scanner reports, the bear was tranquilized just before 3 p.m. behind the Starbucks and deputies were asking for a fire truck with a ladder to secure the animal, however as of 3:03 p.m. the animal was reportedly down on the ground.

All east and westbound lanes of the Interstate 210 Freeway near the scene were shut down for a period. The bear was reportedly on or very near the freeway, according to the CHP.

Westbound lanes were reopened by 3:07 p.m., the eastbound lanes are still closed, the CHP said.

marty, you are inappropriate, immature and just plain creepy. If you're supposedly a Buddhist, you're failing miserably... I'm unsubscribing from updates to this article, so don't waste your supposed sense of humor on me anymore.

AISHA HAS SELF IMPLODED. Aisha, you are in a war with yourself. I am not now, nor have I ever been in the boxing ring with you. I am a faceless person in the crowd. You need to figure out who you need me to represent to you. When you do, you will be able to go foward in life. I am not giving you humor, or any sarcasm with this response. It has made you most angry of all. When you feel better, you can apologize. I really do wish you well.

Aisha Thanks for your concern about where I live. When I moved here in the late 1960's, we did not have a bear problem or wildlife problem. Our family purposely chose NOT to live in the mountains or a wilderness area. We didn't want to deal with fires, mudslides or wild animals...(skunks, raccoon, squirrels, possums, etc., excepted)! We've had many pets over the years and they were never a meal for larger pray! Whether people like it or not, I will keep complaining about it! Obviously something has changed in the last few years, to make the animals want to move from the wilderness down into the suburbs. I'm not sure what that was....possibly the fires that burned the Angeles Wilderness several years back, possibly over population...maybe both...who knows. There has to be some type of wildlife management. I'm sure you're not advocating that bears be allowed to roam free in a school yard full of kindergartners!

Glendale and La Canada used to have a policy "Outta town by sundown", and all the little critters knew they had to skeedaddle when the streetlights would flicker back in the '50's or 60's...Oh wait...Scratch that...
