Glendale Police to Conduct Weekend DUI Patrols

The patrols are slated to start at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from the City of Glendale.

Officers from the Glendale Police Department’s DUI Enforcement Team will be deploying this weekend to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers in the Department’s ongoing traffic safety campaign. DUI Saturation Patrols will deploy on Saturday between the hours of 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and/or arrests.

In California, DUI related accidents have led to 774 deaths in 2010. Simply designating a sober driver could have eliminated those deaths. After falling dramatically for five consecutive years, DUI figures for 2011 flattened, indicating that DUI deaths remained the same as 2010. Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have resulted in 374 crashes causing harm to 102 of our friends and neighbors in Glendale.

DUIs can impact the economy in addition to the pain and suffering of those immediately impacted. Conservatively, a fatality results in a $1.4 million loss, an injury $70,000 loss, and a crash that only damages property averages nearly $9000.

Funding for this program is from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
