Glendale Police Montrose Substation Undergoing Remodel

The department hopes to have a grand reopening celebration in early October.

The Glendale Police Department's COPPS Police Substation in Montrose on Ocean View Boulevard will be undergoing a remodel for several weeks and will likely be closed through early October, according to Officer Abe Chung of the GPD.

Chung, along with new North Area Commander Lt. Lola Abrahamian, spoke before the Montrose Shopping Park Association Board at its monthly meeting on Thursday.

"We received a donation from a local resident of $10,000 to remodel the Montrose substation," Chung said. "We are finally moving through and starting the process this Saturday with cleaning out the substation in preparation for the remodel, which is going to start on Monday, Sept. 9."

The substation is staffed by volunteers and is utilized by the department, although an officer is not always on duty there. The rent and utilities for the station are paid for by the MSPA.

"And the location is donated to us, we don’t pay for that. We are absolutely thankful for that," Abrahamian said when a board member asked her if she knew the MPSA paid for the station. "Unfortunately we can’t man it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We do have our volunteers who man it throughout the week, and the officers come up and utilize the facilities."

Abrahamian was also asked by a board member if the department could get back to having a "cop on the beat" assigned to walk the shopping park regularly.

"We have staffing issues, just has everyone has been hit by the economy, the Glendale Police Department has as well. We do meet our minimum staffing for personnel within the city to patrol the city," Abrahamian said. "Sometimes we are not able to designate somebody to just do a walk beat. The officers that are assigned to north area command, the officers that work up here on a regular basis, have been asked to occasionally park their car and walk the Honolulu [Avenue] shopping center, so I will reinforce that."

Chung said the remodel should take two or three weeks and the department is aiming for a early October grand reopening celebration.
