Gas Line Ruptures Near 5 Freeway

The Western Avenue offramp on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway is closed due to a gas line rupture near the freeway, the California Highway reports.

A construction crew accidentally ruptured a gas line Tuesday in Glendale, shutting down an off-ramp on the Golden State (5) Freeway and necessitating the evacuation of at least one apartment building near the broken line, a police sergeant said.

The gas line rupture took place at the intersection of San Fernando Road and Western Avenue around 1:20 p.m., Glendale police spokesman Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

"A construction crew was digging a hole when it accidentally hit the gas line," Lorenz said.

The rupture forced the closure of that intersection and an apartment building near the broken line, Lorenz said.

"But there were no injuries, no fire, no explosion," Lorenz added.

The rupture also forced the shutdown of the Western Avenue off-ramp on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Christian Craycraft.

A SigAlert was declared by the CHP at 4:21 p.m., Craycraft said.

There was no word on how long repairs would take.
