A man was in custody Tuesday on suspicion of drunken driving after running a red light at an intersection in Industry in a large pickup truck and riding over the engine compartment of a small car, authorities said.
A deputy who happened to be right behind the Ford F-250 pickup as it headed east on Valley Boulevard estimated the suspect was driving at 90 miles per hour around 10 p.m. Sunday when he rolled over the compact, which was headed north on Hacienda Boulevard, said Sgt. Jeffrey Kim of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Industry Station.
"It ran over the engine compartment," he said, adding the truck then struck a fire hydrant and a utility pole.
A man, a woman and their 14-year-old son who were in the compact were taken to County-USC Medical Center to be examined but appeared to have escaped major injury, he said.
The suspect suffered scrapes and cuts, and his female passenger complained of arm pain, Kim said, adding that both were taken to a hospital for treatment, after which the man will be transported to the Industry Station to be booked on suspicion of felony drunk driving.
