Alleged Assault and Elder Abuse in Verdugo Woodlands

An 83-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by her caretaker during the early morning hours of July 4.

At approximately 12:56 a.m. on July 4, an 83-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted in her home by her caretaker, according to Lt. Ian Grimes of the Glendale Police Department. The incident occured in the 1800 block of Verdugo Knolls Dr., which is just south of the Montrose border.

Luis Cuevos, age 41 of Glendale, was taken into custody on suspicion of striking the elderly woman with a chair. Cuevos lives with the victim, according to police.

The woman was hospitalized due to her injuries. She sustained bruises and was bleeding from her mouth, according to police.

Police said that when officials first arrived at the scene, the victim's injuries appeared life-threatening. The headline for the initial police report read that this incident was an attempted murder, and an alert was sent out through Crimemapping.com declaring this incident as such. However, Lt. Grimes said that since the victim's life is not in jeopardy, this incident is no longer classified as an attempted murder.

It is ultimately up to the District Attorney to file charges against a suspect. Lt. Grimes said that felony assault and elder abuse charges could be filed.
