Community Corner

One Rooster Per Household

Did you know that if you live in Altadena you can own, breed and keep as many roosters on your property as you want and there is no ordinance in place to prevent a person from keeping 20, 30 or even 40 roosters on one property in Altadena.  The City of Los Angeles, passed an ordinance a couple years ago that prohibits a property from having more than one rooster on it.  By taking steps to bring a similiar ordinance to the Board of Supervisors, we would be cutting down on a lot of noise since roosters don't just crow at sun up and protect our community against cock fighting which is a known reason as to why one property would house roosters in the dozens and no hens.  Think about the element of people that cock fighting attracts.  Do we want people who fight roosters moving to Altadena or visiting someone in Altadena who is keeping the roosters on their property? Chickens on a property to produce eggs is a great thing but a bunch of roosters sitting in a back yard in cages should be banned.
