Crescenta Valley Dog Park Opens

Learn about the opening, hours and volunteer opportunities at the area's first off-leash dog park.

Local canines can now visit the Crescenta Valley Dog Park in La Crescenta. The park will remain open from dawn to dusk on weekends until the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. on Oct. 19, officials told Patch.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the dog park can attend a meeting Thursday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. in the Crescenta Valley Park community room, said Isac Duenas of L.A. County Parks and Recreation.

So far the community reaction is positive, with only one concerned local, said Crescenta Valley Town Council President Cheryl Davis.

"One gent said he was skeptical about the lack of grass and the use of cedar wood chip, but he told me that many people told him that the grass is high maintenance, dies, and is continually being re-seeded. He said the cedar wood chip did not get stuck in his dog's fur and paws as he thought it would so he was okay with no grass," Davis said.

Davis explained cedar wood chip helps keep the insect and flea population down, and that people and dogs love the smell.

The designed park has a watering station for dogs that circulates and drains fresh water. There are also benches under the shade of tall oak trees, Davis said.

Davis noted more than 20 dogs stopped by the park both Saturday and Sunday.

"It's a dream come true for dogs and dog owners alike. It's so exciting to be at the pilot dog park for L.A. County and I have made many friends and worked with great people who were committed to seeing this project happen: the Park Planners., Parks & Recreation, and of course, Supervisor Antonovich, his Pasadena Field Deputy, and his wonderful staff," Davis said.

I feel bad that teachers are having to pull money out of their own pockets, I wonder whateverRead More happened to the lottery money that was supposed to go to schools? I am a volunteer for an organization that offers free drug education kits to any teacher with booklets on the various harmful drugs . Educators play a vital role for our children and in society and should be supported in any way possible. Any who might be interested, e-mail me at tbadger2000@yahoo.com.
