Community Corner

Chamber Music Gala in elegant Altadena home will sell out fast.

Reserve your seat by Wednesday, Feb. 19, for the 3rd annual Chamber Music Gala benefiting the Pasadena Community Orchestra (PCO).  Listen to the award-winning Elixir Trio (www.elixirpianotrio.com) and enjoy an afternoon of music, wine and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are $50 in advance (or $60 at the door), with all proceeds benefitting PCO.

Part of the repertoire will be Anton Arensky’s Piano Trio No. 1, regarded as his masterpiece and considered one of the finest examples of Russian romantic piano trio. Arensky dedicated this piece to the memory of cello virtuoso Karl Davidoff, and the cello plays a major role in the trio, giving the piece a particularly rich sound. Also on the program are Adagio from Spartacus by Khatchaturian, Astor Piazzolla’s popular tango, Oblivion, and Cassandra’s Rockaby by contemporary composer Penka Kouneva.

Known for promoting works by contemporary composers, the dynamic Elixir Piano Trio performs both traditional and modern repertoire with classical, folk and jazz influences. The group won the Most Distinguished Musician award at the 2005 IBLA International Competition in Italy and is the Trio-in-Residence at the Beverly Hills International Music Festival.

The Elixir Trio is a truly international ensemble: pianist Lucy Nargizyan was raised in Moscow, violinist Samvel Chilingarian is a native of Armenia and studied in Vienna, and cellist Garik Terzian grew up in the former Czechoslovakia. The three of them are members of the faculty at East Los Angeles College, and Nargizyan and Terzian are also on the Glendale Community College faculty.

The concert will be held at an elegant and historic home in Altadena. Space is limited so you must RSVP to publicity@pcomusic.org by Wednesday, Feb. 19. Find more information at www.pcomusic.org or call (626) 445-6708. Tickets are available online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/537861.
