Patch Picks: Five Who Give

1. Recent graduate received this year’s Falcon Award that honors one student annually based on scholarship, leadership, character and service to the community, as nominated and voted for by his or her peers. Lock not only scored high marks in school, but also worked as a counselor at the and volunteered in a community soup kitchen. Lock is now on his way to Georgetown University.

2. A 35-year resident of La Crescenta, was honored last November by the for his commitment to the community. Allmon has been a scoutmaster for over 20 years, helping 37 boys complete their Eagle Awards. He also has focused on efforts to create a veterans memorial in .

3. The ladies of the dedicate their time and resources to serving the community in many ways. Co-president Genny Burdick told Patch that for over 40 years, meetings have included the passing of a piggy bank to collect spare change to plant trees in Angeles National Forest. The club also donates time, energy and funding to , , Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and local schools. To honor the club’s 100 years of service, a tree was planted in its honor this year as part of La Crescenta’s Arbor Day celebrations.

4. Patch Whiz Kid makes more than one commitment to those in need. The teen has donated more than 10 inches of her hair to Locks of Love and supported the Los Angeles Food Bank. She also asked for donations to Samaritan’s Purse, an organization that provided funds to those in need all over the world, rather than receive gifts at her sweet sixteen birthday party. On top of that, she’s been honored with awards from the Girl Scouts.

5. The Crescenta Valley Drug and Alcohol Prevention Coalition is a grass roots organization of community members, local parents and even police officers. In addition to running the drop-in center where kids and teens can spend time safe from the dangers and temptations of drugs and alcohol, the coalition offers parent education seminars as part of its mission. honored the community group as Organization of the Year.
