This year's Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular could use a little boost from community friends.

Enter the "My Hometown" photo contest for a chance to win up to $500 and have your artwork displayed at the Summer Night on the Plaza festival. A La Crescenta entry won in the color category last year. For more info, visit the City of Glendale’s website or call 818-551-3098. The summer festival will feature live entertainment, a silent auction and a sampling of foods from Glendale restaurants. It takes place July 28 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the City Hall Perkins Plaza & Atrium, 141 N. Glendale Ave. in Glendale. But your tickets today! Adult tickets are $20, children are $7. 

America’s oldest children’s bookstore, , hosts a story time today at 10:30 a.m. Located at 2207 Honolulu Ave, the shop invites children and their grown-up friends to come in and listen to a reading. The event is free. For more information, call the store at 818-248-9668 or see their website.

The adult book club meets tonight from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at the , 4521 La Crescenta Ave. Tonight’s discussion is on the book Shanghai Shadow by Lois Ruby. Even if you haven’t read the selection, stop by to meet members and learn about next month’s pick, My Life in France by Julia Child.

The Crescenta Valley Fireworks Association is planning this year’s Star-Spangled Fourth of July Fireworks show. The non-profit is asking for the community’s help in making this year’s show not only spectacular, but also affordable and accessible. Tax-deductible donations can be made by writing a check and sending it along to the Crescenta Valley Fireworks Association, 2629 Foothill Blvd. #176, La Crescenta, CA 91214. The event starts at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 4, atl, 4343 La Crescenta Ave. Food trucks will be on site. For more information, stop by the CVFA’s website.

The New Mothers Forum meets every Tuesday at the Verdugo Hills Hospital, 1812 Verdugo Blvd. The free support group meets on the fourth floor, with sessions for mothers and infants from 9:30 to 11 a.m. followed by mothers and toddlers from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information call the hospital at 818-952-2272.

I feel bad that teachers are having to pull money out of their own pockets, I wonder whateverRead More happened to the lottery money that was supposed to go to schools? I am a volunteer for an organization that offers free drug education kits to any teacher with booklets on the various harmful drugs .
