Community Corner

Coffee n' Cuffs

The Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station welcomed the public to coffee and donuts early Tuesday morning.

Coffee, donuts, and a life-sized, smiling dog greeted citizens as they strolled into the Tuesday morning, where the officers hosted "Coffee n' Cuffs."

"Coffee n' Cuffs" provides an opportunity for the community to get to know law enforcement in a casual, inviting atmosphere. The Sheriff's Station provided pamphlets on neighborhood watch programs, school bullying, internet safety, the CERT program, and more.

Capt. David Silversparre was on hand, as were volunteer sheriffs, detectives and liaisons from the Glendale Police Department.

Deputy Jorge Valdivia organized the event. In an interview with Patch, he explained proudly that "crime has gone down in the last three years." Serious crimes fell 14 percent in 2008, 13 percent in 2009 and 10 percent in 2010.

Nonetheless, Valdivia reminds the community to be vigilant. Since robberies and residential theft are the biggest crimes in La Crescenta-Montrose, La Canada, and Glendale, it is necessary that citizens lock their cars and refrain from leaving valuables inside. Commonly stolen items include MP3 players, purses, phones and laptops.

"Don't make yourself an easy victim," said Valdivia. Furthermore, he advised citizens to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department if they see any suspicious activity. Valdivia explains that the thieves are usually professional crews who prey during the day. Sometimes, they can masquerade as magazines salesmen, who are in reality casing neighborhoods for homes with everyone out.

Whatever the issue, Valdivia stressed that the police are always happy to take calls and help. They strive to improve the "quality of life" for residents, and they will help with anything, whether it be a constantly noisy neighbor or a dangerous crime.
