Basin 141 to Replace The Fat Dog at 2265 Honolulu Avenue

Two long-time Fat Dog employees are starting a new pub in place of the Fat Dog. It will be called Basin 141 and will likely open in September.

We reported on Wednesday that the Fat Dog gastropub would be relocating to North Hollywood - the good news is it won't be leaving an empty storefront behind.

Instead, two brothers who have worked at the Fat Dog for the entire time it has been open, Dave and Joe Friedman, will be taking over the spot with a new pub called Basin 141.

Dave Friedman told Patch they plan to expand the beer list by about 5 or 6 taps.  The cocktail menu will be a bit shorter but will focus on high quality ingredients, with fresher juices.  The food menu has not yet been fully decided.

The Friedmans are working with the state to get the liquor license transferred from the Fat Dog's owner - ideally, the new bar will open in early September, but it may take a few weeks beyond that, Friedman said.  The Fat Dog is slated to close in the next month.

The name of the new pub is meant to pay tribute to the Los Angeles area.  The first part of the name derives from the L.A. basin and the second, to the earliest U.S. census of Los Angeles in 1841 that recorded 141 people in living in the area.

The new owners want to focus heavily on customer experience and customer service, something they believe is vital to being a business owner in Montrose.

"We want to hire the friendliest and most experienced staff.... everything travels by word of mouth in Montrose," Friedman said.
