Glendale Art Association 2012 Fall Salon

Paintings sold last fall at the 2011 Glendale Art Association’s (GAA) Fall Salon resulted in art scholarships being awarded to three High School students who plan to go on to study photography, design and fine art. The 2012 GAA Fall Salon will award five students, one from each of the Glendale High Schools. The GAA Secretary, educator/artist Diane Carter, said, “I will ask art teachers to choose their best and most determined students who are going to study one of the visual arts at a university or art school, and let them know that financial need should be considered.”

The 2012 GAA Fall Salon, at White’s Gallery, 2414 Honolulu Ave in Montrose, is a juried exhibition of original paintings, photography and sculpture by dozens of artists in Glendale and neighboring cities. The show goes from Oct. 4 through Oct 27, 2012 with a free Artists Reception on Sunday, Oct. 7, 5-8pm featuring fine art, fine food and fine music. Natalie Lundeen, an artist recently back from painting in France, and who has been featured in Southwest Art, said, “I really want to show my work at the Fall Salon because I checked out a GAA show last year and was impressed by the work of the members. And, as a Glendale resident, I enjoy being a part of our local art community.”

The emotional impact of the combined artwork of professionals and near-professional artists on display at the Fall and Spring Salons has become a signature mark of the Glendale Art Association, a non-profit group first formed in 1922 to “create and preserve beauty and to promote the appreciation of art.” The juried exhibitions are not the work of a single artist, nor a single genre or style. Like the multi-layered personality of a well-drawn character in a story, there is a depth to the whole show, dependent upon the intensity of its parts. The sheer volume of the art, the number of award-winning participants and the level of technical quality, is a bit overwhelming, and hard to assimilate in one stroll through the gallery. It is not for the faint-hearted, yet it has a heart, because the scholarships provide creative energy for the next generation.

The Fall Salon has attracted many sponsors including Montrose Travel, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney—Keith Morris, Swains Art Supplies, Carter Sexton Artist Materials, Segil Fine Arts Gallery, Ajax Linen & Uniform and Whites Framing and Restoration Gallery. In addition to awarding a monetary prize in each category, a special prize by Swains will be awarded for art depicting scenes of Glendale.

This year, 25% of the sale of paintings will go to the High School art student scholarship fund, up from 10% last year. A further refinement is the flat panel display in the gallery window that will be showing 10 works of art by various artists and will loop continuously throughout the month. This is expected to attract passersby, and enables artists to showcase more than the three artwork maximum they can submit to the jury. As one of their three works, each artist may provide a small work of art, no larger than 9”x12” to encourage sales for all budgets.
