UPDATED: Small Grass Fire Breaks Out Near 134, 2 Freeways

Fire fighters have a handle on the flames and have nearly called knockdown, officials said.

5:37 p.m.: City officials said shortly before 5:30 p.m. that the fire was nearly knocked down.

The 2 Freeway was shut down between the 134 Freeway and the Foothill (210) Freeway to give fire crews a clear path to the scene, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos. Transition roads between the east and westbound 210 Freeway to the 2 Freeway, and all onramps between the 134 Freeway and the 210 Freeway were closed.

The 2 Freeway was reopened in both directions at 4:30 p.m., according to the CHP.

Fire crews from Los Angeles city and county were among those who battled the blaze, along with firefighters from Burbank and Pasadena.

Erik Scott, spokesman for the Los Angeles City Fire Department, updated the assitance sent to Glendale and said the department dispatched 50 firefighters and three water-dropping helicopters to the scene.

The county Fire Department sent "six camp crews, two water-dropping helicopters, a strike team, an engine, two battalion chiefs and one assistant chief to help Glendale," according to spokesman David Bloom.

4:27 p.m.: Approximately 75 acres have burned in the Glendale fire, according to city officials.

Glenoaks Canyon and up to the 2700 block of Chevy Chase Canyon have been evacuated. Residents are advised to not return to their homes, since fire crews need access to the roads, local media reports.

School officials said Glenoaks Middle School was not evacuated as stated earlier, according to KFI News.

3:51 p.m.: Glendale officials have established an evacuation Center for those affected by the fire.

The location is the Adult Recreation Center, 201 E Colorado St.

Glendale Community College has cancelled classes and Glenoaks Elementary School has been evacuated, officials said.

The Glendale freeway has been shut down in both directions north of the 134 freeway, said the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

PREVIOUSLY: Los Angeles city firefighters are assisting Glendale firefighters at the scene of a small grass fire off the westbound Ventura Freeway near Harvey Drive, says fire department spokesman Erik Scott.

About three dozen Los Angeles city firefighters and four helicopter crews have been assigned to assist Glendale firefighters in the lower portion of Chevy Chase Canyon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the Mountain Street and Holly Drive offramps from the southbound Glendale (2) Freeway have been closed, along with ramps from the southbound 2 to the Ventura (134) in both directions. On the northbound 2 Freeway, the Holly offramp is closed, and on the westbound 134 Freeway, the Harvey Drive offramp is closed.

Chevy Chase Canyon has been closed, and some residents are being evacuated.
