Remember Spc. Nicholas P. Steinbacher on Memorial Day

Spc. Nicholas P. Steinbacher was a La Crescenta native, Crescenta Valley High football player, and a soldier in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

This Memorial Day, take a pause to remember Spc. Nicholas P. Steinbacher, a La Crescenta native who perished when a makeshift bomb detonated near his Humvee on Dec. 10, 2006, in Baghdad, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was 22 years old.

Spc. Steinbacher loved skydiving and fishing with his grandfather, and played football during all four of his years at Crescenta Valley High School, according to his obituary on Legacy.com. As a football player, Spc. Steinbacher wore the same number that his father, Paul, and his older brother, Dan, wore during their years at CVHS: number 51.

Spc. Steinbacher graduated from CVHS in 2003, went on to College of the Canyons in Valencia and was about to finish his associate's degree when he enlisted in the Army.
