Comments of the Week: "If you can't bike safely, you're unqualified to own your equipment."

Check out the best, funniest, strangest and most informative things our readers have to say.

We take pride in our work here at Patch and always strive to bring our readers interesting news. However, we must admit, sometimes the most interesting part of a great Patch story is the comments from readers that it sparks.

Here are some of the best, funniest, strangest and most informative comments from Patch stories and board posts around the San Gabriel Valley and Crescenta Valley Patch sites this past week:

Attention Bicyclists with Death Wishes

In Sierra Madre, reader Jonathan sends a warning to cyclists on his commute route, particularly on Sierra Madre Boulevard. He describes a close run-in with one cyclist.

He wrote: Attention bicyclists (and the occasional skateboarder) rolling along the streets of Sierra Madre and, in particular, Sierra Madre Blvd.  You do NOT have the right to blow through a stop sign just because you're enjoying your coast downhill or don't want to lose your momentum going uphill.  Or because you're wearing that hip skin-hugging costume...sorry...I mean attire.  I travel the N-S route from my home on S. Mountain Trail frequently, and this morning one of you narrowly escaped death at the corner of Sierra Madre Blvd and Mountain Trail.  It wasn't the first time, and despite my protest, I'd hate to see one of you seriously injured or killed by your own stupidity.  If you can't bike safely, you're unqualified to own your equipment.

Police Blotter: Man Allegedly Robbed at Gunpoint on Mayflower Avenue

Monrovia Patch reported a group of men allegedly assaulted a man, threw a brick at him, and pointed a handgun at him before he turned over his phone and wallet. The story drew many comments from residents who perceive the quality of life in town is decreasing. Commenter J. Knight offered a different perspective.

J. Knight July 24, 2013 at 05:26 PM I agree rubberband. WE are Monrovia. Rather than complaining about the city on a post, volunteer, run for office, clean up your street, be part of neighborhood watch, invite your neighbors over to dinner. In other words, be the change you would like to see in Monrovia instead of waiting for others to make it happen. Our next door neighbors have gone out of their way to get the block together. Now we have community on our street and we watch out for each other. I feel safe where I live. That's just one way to run the bad out of town.

South Pas Preservation Foundation Movie Nights Return!

Thanks to great community support, the SPPF is happy to announce that "Beethoven" will be show on Saturday, August 17th. This 1992 family fun film, was shot extensively in South Pas, and  features an oversized bundle of St. Barnard canine love, as well as Bonnie Hunt, Charles Grodin, and Dean Jones as an evil vet.

Also mark your calendars for Saturday, August 24 for the 125th Anniversary of South Pasadena time capsule instillation  and dedication at the Iron Works. This event will be followed by a very special screening of "Back to the Future", with Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd who get tangled up in a time traveling De Lorean as Fox's teen character tries to adjust history. This movie is PG and might be a bit long for the very youngest citizens of So Pas, but we are excited about the fun tie in with our time capsule and are hoping that lots of school age families will join us. Come for the dedication, bring a picnic and enjoy the movie!

Thanks again to our South Pasadena families and friends, we couldn't have done it with out you! Follow us on Facebook - South Pasadena Preservation Foundation

BEAR ALERT FOR MAGNOLIA AVE AND PRIMROSE AVE.

Tuesday, July 22, 2013:   There was a medium sized Brown Bear ambling through the alley between Monroe Place and Oaks Ave. Tuesday morning at around 1:30am.  The bear had evidently made the rounds of trash cans through the alley from Magnolia Ave. to Primrose Ave.  He or she was last seen going either north or south on Primrose Ave. from out of the alley.  This was a beautiful bear, with a nice coat and very healthy looking.  Could have been in a Petting Zoo if bears were allowed in petting zoos.  I have noticed lately being retired and working on my computer in the front window area, every day pretty much, that all the animals, dear with small fawns, coyotes and such, appear to be so healthy and well fed.  Amazing that animals living in a desert climate in the foothills look so good.

This was the second time there was a bear in the alley.  The first time about two months ago, at around three am, a small black bear turned over a bin and went through the trash bags, leaving quite a mess.
