Photo: New Jewelry Store to Open in Montrose

The former location of the Paper Rabbit will now be a jewelry store.

A new jewelry store is set to open in Montrose on Honolulu Avenue.  The building owner will apparently run the store, said Melinda Clarke, Executive Director of Montrose Chamber of Commerce.  The location is Paper Rabbit's former spot at 2269 Honolulu Ave. The Paper Rabbit has since moved to 3817 1/2 Ocean View Blvd.  Check back with Patch for more updates about when the store will open.

Does Montrose really need another jewelry store? My question is, is how do stores like this stay a float during these down times?. I guess if you sell one 50,000 diamond ring you might be able to survive 6 months or so? Don't quite know the mark up on that type of stuff?   more ›

Foothill 76 Gas Station Could Reopen in May

The previous owner retired. The station is completing improvements and could open by the end of May. No exact date is available.

The abandoned Foothill Boulevard 76 Station is set to reopen, possibly this month, according to La Canada Flintridge city officials.  The owner retired, leaving the 76 Station at 2384 Foothill Blvd. in La Canada Flintridge, La Canada Flintridge City Manager Mark Alexander told Patch.  "I don't want to speculate as to the reasons why the 76 station closed but I do know that the previous owner retired," Alexander said.   "The new station operator is hoping to reopen the station this month and is nearing completion of their improvements." However, Alexander does not know the target grand opening date.  While the station remains closed, locals are turning to other locations for gas, including Valero, Foothill 76, Shell and Chevron.

Better check those tanks and make sure they are not leaking. It's very strange for someone just to up and leave a gas station like this. More questions than answers.   more ›

Foothill 76 Gas Station Left Abandoned for Weeks

Crews and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department don't know what caused the 76 Station owner to close the station.

Local drivers may have noticed the caution tape surrounding the 76 Station at 2384 Foothill Blvd. in La Canada Flintridge, near the border of Montrose-La Crescenta.  "As far as we know, we have no idea why it closed," said Sheriff's Sgt. Brett Hanson of the Crescenta Valley Station.  Patch checked with Conoco Phillips customer service representatives but no information about why the station closed is immediately available.  Check back with Patch for more updates about why the gas station is closed.  What do you know about the closed gas station? Has this presented a problem for you when you need to fill up?

ConocoPhillips recently divested it's retail gasoline station business and refineries nationally moving them into the Phillips 66 Company (including the 76 brand). Phillips 66 no longer owns or operates any gas station in Los Angeles County (it just brands the business). So it's mom and pop who are running these businesses now. BP/ARCO and ExxonMobil are selling all of their retail gas stations …   more ›

Will an $8.3-Million Ruling Make You Change Your KFC Habit?

The fast food chain has been ordered to pay damages to girl who went into a coma after eating a Twister chicken wrap.

A judge in Australia recently ordered KFC to pay $8.3 million to the family of a girl in Sydney whose brain was damaged after she ate one of the fast food giant’s chicken wraps in 2005 and evidently contracted salmonella. The girl, then aged seven years, went into a coma for months. Although KFC has described the case of food poisoning as “very tragic," it has denied any wrongdoing and has said it would appeal the decision. Click here to read more about the case. We thought we’d ask our readers whether they think the Australian court’s ruling is going to affect how they eat at KFC, which has a franchise right here in the Crescenta Valley, near the border of Montrose-La Crescenta, in La Canada Flintridge.  Share your views in the Comments …

L.A. County Health officials launch crackdown on fish mislabeling violations.

Sparked by findings that more than half of all fish is wrongly labeled at restaurants and markets in Los Angeles County, a swift crackdown launched to ensure consumers are protected and get what they are paying for. Moving quickly to address the public's alarm about the false labeling, County Supervisors voted to direct the Department of Public Health to work with federal and state agencies to address the issue of seafood mislabeling in Los Angeles County. “Consumers must have confidence that the fish they are buying at restaurants and grocery stores is safe and labeled correctly,” said Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich in a statement. The Board of Supervisors approved studying the possible use of the Food and Drug Administration’s …
