Budding artists and talented foothill kids are invited to use crayons, markers, pencils, paints pastels, paper or fabric to create a poster promoting stewardship of our water resources.  Foothill Municipal Water District and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California are sponsoring the "Water is Life" student art contest for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Photos: Honoring Lives Lost During Armenian Genocide

The City of Glendale's Armenian Genocide Commemoration at the Alex Theatre remembered the lives lost and celebrated the Armenian culture 97 years after the Ottoman Empire killed nearly 1.5 million Armenians.

Hundreds of community members and local dignitaries gathered at the Alex Theatre to remember and honor victims of the Armenian Genocide from 1915 to 1923.  Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), Glendale City Councilman Ara Najarian and Rafi Manoukian were some of the speakers during the memorial event Tuesday.  Armenians continue demanding recognition of the genocide, which many historians say was the first genocide of the 20th Century, according to Huffington Post.  President Barack Obama referred to the killings nearly a century ago as "one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century," Huffington Post reported.  He has, however, stopped short of saying the word genocide.  Obama had vowed as a presidential candidate to recognize the genocide once…

Shakespeare Ensemble to Perform at Descanso

The Los Angeles theatrical group, the California Shakespeare Ensemble, focuses on the words and the characters, not costumes and 'artificial inflection.'

A new Shakespeare ensemble will debut at Descanso Gardens on April 21 with a performance of Twelfth Night. Three working actors had an idea one evening over dinner: what if they got the best Shakespearean actors they knew, then stripped their favorite plays down to only the words and the people? No fairy costumes. No artificial inflection. Just a dogged determination to tell the story at hand. By the end of dinner, the California Shakespeare Ensemble was born. The ensemble is based on the idea of a supergroup; it is a side project for currently working actors, and an incubator for up-and-coming actors. Some in the ensemble are the stars of hit TV shows (Ken Baumann on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, David Blue from Stargate: …

Foothill Locals Seek Funds for T-Shirt Business (Video)

The trio of entrepreneurs mixed art and business to create [SIC] Apparel in a garage in La Cañada.

To three La Cañada High School graduates, fresh out of college, T-shirts are a vehicle for exhibiting art, and paying respect to the artist. And now, the trio's business, [SIC] Apparel, is soliciting start-up capital to the tune of $18,000. Amount raised as of Thursday morning: $5,284, according to [SIC] Apparel's Kickstarter campaign page. Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects.  [SIC] Apparel is the brainchild of Francis Pollara, Anya Rosen and Walter Mansilla, who graduated from La Cañada High in 2007. Alex Theatre May Close its Curtains on Renovations

The Alex Theatre was supported by Glendale's Redevelopment Agency, which was eliminated by the state, and now its future ownership is unknown. The landmark's entertainment history spans from a 1920s vaudeville house to a performing arts center.

Glendale's Alex Theatre may have to put aside renovations pending a possible sale following the elimination of redevelopment agencies in California, according to the Glendale News-Press.  If the city can't take ownership, the landmark theater could go up for sale - which would make it at threat to close, The News-Press reports.  "In their most recent quarterly report, Glendale Arts, which operates the theater, said they’re holding off on the major upgrades until they know whether earlier moves to try and transfer ownership of the venue from the now-defunct Redevelopment Agency to the city are deemed legal," according to the News-Press. The Alex Theatre opens its curtains to foothill and greater Los Angeles residents for performances from …

20 years ago...I was part of a show to save the Alex Theatre. It was called Alexander, Then and Now. I think they should do another show and use the local talent from the area to put it on. It would raise money as well as awareness. When I did the show, it was so important that even Bob Hope showed up to show his support. If we did something like that again, we could raise money for Glendale Arts…   more ›
