Starbucks Approved for Montrose

Glendale Planning Hearing Officer Laura Stotler approved the parking reduction permit, stating that there is sufficient parking in Montrose.

Starbucks could be headed to Montrose now that Glendale planning officials approved a parking permit reduction.

The coffee chain's proposed location at 2284 Honolulu Ave., across the street from the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, was approved, according to a Feb. 1 letter from Glendale Planning Hearing Officer Laura Stotler.

A parking reduction permit allows Starbucks to not provide the 14 parking spaces required for a fast-food location.

There are five parking spaces located behind the planned Starbucks, according to the project proposal. Starbucks also wants to create an outdoor patio, which will be a 354 square-foot seating area and will reduce the floor area of the 2,122 square-foot location to 1,768 square feet. There would be 23 seats inside and 13 seats outside.

Montrose business owners, property owners, community members, Starbucks and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf representatives addressed the potential parking problem in a public hearing in January

Do we need yet ANOTHER coffee house in Montrose? It's not like it's not accessible as it's right down the street currently next door to the movie theater on Verdugo. Does a zip code REALLY make that much of a difference when it's less than a 5 minute drive down the street? It shouldn't. Frankly Starbucks coffee isn't that great, and I find Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf a better product over all. I suppose if people wanted more room to sit around to view Montrose life, the patio area is a good idea, but it saddens me to see a long time landmark go to a greedy corporation as opposed to a small business which is the heart of Montrose shopping.

@ML are you saying that Starbucks might have wanted a 91020 zip code?

I may be out numbered, but I'm glad to see it come to Montrose. I can count on one hand the times I've been at CBTL and I've lived in Montrose 30+ years.

So happy that they are coming to Montrose. CBTL is horrible in my opinion but those who like it will continue to go there. I love Starbucks and will now have a reason to visit Honolulu frequently.

Starbucks coffee is not at all good tasting and I get a laugh at how these people mare dumb enought to pay their high prices for coffee and the other things that are all over priced.

I'm also one of those who's glad to see that corner retail store become a Starbucks Coffee.
But I would LOVE it if Starbucks could somehow find a way to remove the drop ceiling which was added sometime in the 80s to expose the amazing stenciled wooden beams that are hidden from view, and it would also be great if the facility could keep the concrete floors as they are now, showing off the wonderful pattern and original contractors stamp from the time the place was a bank building. Starbucks could make some valuable community points by incorporating their design into the history of Montrose instead of slapping up drywall and making the place look like every other Starbucks establishment.

Although I will still be going to 7 Eleven for my coffee every morning. I think the Starbucks is going to be a great addition to Montrose. Why is everybody so upset, Coffee Bean will be fine. Success breeds success. Think about it people, Star Cafe and Black Cow are owned by the same person, a coinsidence? I dont think so. It will bring more people through Montrose, and thats what matters. We have a great little community and this will ad to it. Everything will be fine. Just relax and enjoy it.

Off subject... Can they make the Farmers Market about food instead of a Swap Meet?

Let's face it, Starbucks is not going to bring people to the area to boost business - not when there are 6 other Starbucks within a 5 mile radius. What it does do is further drive up rent prices and force out more of the little mom & pop stores that make Montrose so unique. It's a sad precedent in my opinion.

The only thing that drives up rent is greedy landlords and taxes.
