Farewell: Thank You, Readers

Editor Nicole Charky thanks the Crescenta Valley community for participating on Patch.

For the past year and a half, I have had the extraordinary opportunity to work as a journalist covering my hometown. Now, it is time to thank you, readers, for your support.

Jan. 29 will be my final day as editor of Montrose-La Crescenta Patch.

I started this journey in August 2011 with one goal: to make this website a one-stop hub for Crescenta Valley news.

My role as editor gave me the chance to re-explore the geographic puzzle piece we fondly refer to as "the balcony of Los Angeles" or what La Crescenta local Bill Weisman dubs "Far North Glendale."

During my time at Patch, I toured the Rosemont Preserve with USC Professor of Pharmacology Jim Adams and learned how Chumash Indians used plants as medicine; helped organize a historic bike ride through Montrose with Tropico Station's Scott Lowe, Walk Bike Glendale and the Glendale Historical Society; met with a dedicated neighborhood watch group led by Glendale Police Department and even reconnected with childhood friends.

I have had the privilege to report on many major news events, including the hurricane-force winds in November 2011 and the tragic school suicide of 15-year-old Drew Ferraro in February 2012.

These stories and experiences drove me to work harder each day and deliver the best news I could. Chasing and breaking news is my passion and I consider myself lucky to have worked with the talented, award-winning team of editors at Patch.

In February, I will begin my new post as web producer for Los Angeles Times Community News.

It is important that I thank you for sharing your stories and feedback. You taught me how to be a better online journalist and for that I am very grateful.

I am also fortunate to have family and friends who, regardless of their geographic location, still read this website.

Thanks again, mom, for all the great news tips - especially that one about a furry, four-legged celebrity named "Meatball."

I've had a blast working in this tight-knit community. Feel free to stay in touch and follow me on Twitter
