Montrose SAR Slides Injured Hiker to Safety

Authorities rescued an injured hiker in the Angeles National Forest, sliding her to safety over three miles of snowy terrain.

The Montrose Search and Rescue team responded to Little Jimmy Campground near Mile Marker 65.15 of Angeles Crest Highway at noon on Monday. The hiker hurt her right knee the day before, and suffers severe arthritis in her left knee, according to a press release from the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station.

Being unable to hike out on her own, the SAR team, along with personnel from the US Forest Service, placed her in a snow litter and slid her 3 miles down the fire road to Angeles Crest Highway. Once safely on the paved highway, the hiker refused any further medical treatment, and was driven home by a friend.

Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team personnel are reserve sheriff’s deputies who volunteer their time to help others for $1 a year, and who partner with sheriff’s civilian volunteers who volunteer for free. There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who were activated for over 450 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation.
